11:33 p.m. — Edman singles after Oswaldo Cabrera can’t make the full diving stop on a ground ball. Of course, Shohei Ohtani will get a chance at the plate with the game on the line in Game 1 of the World Series. https://info-dealer.com/ Nestor Cortes will come in to face him. Grab your popcorn.
“(Winning Game 1) is super important,” Betts said postgame. “But at the end of the day, as much as I love enjoying this moment, we gotta turn the page and get ready for tomorrow. They are going to come out ready to go but we will too.”
Justin Verlander has a reputation as a big-game pitcher in the postseason — mostly based on two dominant performances against the Yankees in the 2017 ALCS. His World Series history, however, is another matter: He entered this game 0-6 with a 5.68 ERA in seven career starts. That’s the third-worst ERA among pitchers who have started at least five World Series games. Early on, however, he’s cruising: Nine up and nine down through three innings with four strikeouts, including a three-pitch strikeout of Bryce Harper when he got Harper to swing and miss at three straight fastballs at the top of the zone. — Schoenfield

Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani was just helped off the field by training staff after sliding hard into second on a steal attempt in the bottom of the seventh inning. It appeared to be a left wrist or shoulder injury and is unclear if he’ll be taken out of the game.
Amen to that. To live up to a working week’s worth of hype is no small feat. But the Dodgers and Yankees — the No. 1 seeds in the National and American Leagues who are clashing in the Fall Classic for the first time in 43 years — played a Game 1 very much worth the wait.

This key was about a complete offensive effort, one that didn’t rely strictly on Judge, Juan Soto or Giancarlo Stanton doing all of the damage. Well, Judge and Stanton homered — so did Jazz Chisholm Jr. — and those three drove in five of the six Yankees runs. The team went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position and couldn’t finish off a Dodgers team that trailed by five in the fifth inning and basically ran out of relievers at the end of the eighth.
A run scored, but the inning continued. The middle of the Dodgers’ batting order was now up despite the fact that Cole had recorded five outs or near-outs by this point. That created an opportunity for Freeman, easily the most locked-in hitter on a field full of stars.
New York remained without a title since its record 27th in 2009. The Yankees acquired Juan Soto from San Diego in December knowing he would be eligible for free agency after the 2024 Series. The 26-year-old star went 5 for 16 with one RBI in the Series heading into what will be intensely followed bidding on the open market.
