Did you still think that after Jon Lester strolled in from the bullpen for his first relief appearance in nine years and promptly wild-pitched in two runs on the same pitch, cutting that Cubs lead to 5-3?

With the game tied 6–6 after nine innings, a sudden cloudburst resulted in a 17-minute rain delay. During the delay, Cubs right fielder Heyward called his teammates into a weight room behind Chicago’s dugout and told them, “We’re the best team in baseball … for a reason… Stick together and we’re going to win this game.” After the game, many of Heyward’s teammates credited him with renewing their spirits.

Ramírez dove to his right, but the baseball just eluded his glove. Almora read the play perfectly and scored from second base, as the Indians got the ball back to the infield. He allowed a run in the first inning on a two-out double by Dwight Evans that hit the top of the fence in left center and a run in the second on a two-out RBI single to left field by Marty Barrett just in front of Mookie Wilson.

Hernandez got up then, beer in hand, and walked back up to Davey’s office. Darrell Johnson, a former Red Sox manager who was the Mets’ No. 1 advance scout at the time, was already in there, watching the game on television. So was Jay Horwitz, the Mets’ public relations man. Hernandez sat down in a chair across from Davey’s desk and looked at the screen in the corner.

The celebration, however, was put on hold as Carter singled to bring the tying run to the plate. Had he not come out in the ninth inning, Strawberry would have been the next batter. However, Mazzilli had taken his place in the field when Aguilera was brought in to pitch the ninth inning; as a result of the double switch, the pitcher’s spot was now due and Johnson called for utility man Kevin Mitchell to pinch hit for Aguilera, who stood to lose the game as the pitcher of record unless the Mets somehow rallied to at least tie the game.

This World Series championship by the Mets had a strange twist: Lou Gorman, the general manager of the Red Sox, was vice president, player personnel, of the Mets from 1980 to 1983. Working under Mets’ GM Frank Cashen, with whom Gorman served with the Orioles, he helped lay the foundation for the Mets’ championship.

While the 1986 Mets were undeniably strong, they also gained infamy for off-the-field controversy. Both Strawberry and Gooden were youngsters who wound up burning out long before their time because of various substance abuse and personal problems. Hernandez’s cocaine abuse was the subject of persistent rumors even before he joined the Mets, but he publicly acknowledged his addiction in 1985 and made a successful recovery. Lenny Dykstra’s reputation was recently tainted by allegations of steroid use and gambling problems. Instead of putting together a winning dynasty, the problems caused the Mets to soon fall apart. Despite Darryl Strawberry’s numerous off-the-field mishaps, he remains the Mets’ all-time leader in home runs and runs batted in.
