Weapons have plenty of flavors too, with lever action rifles, carbines, machine guns, submachine guns, shotguns, grenade launchers, rocket launchers, pistols, chainsaws, sickles, and even sais. These are all really damn fun to play around with and see what suits your fancy. So if you want to roleplay as an Amish farmer or a Ninja Turtle during the zombie apocalypse, WWZ has you covered.

Think you’ve got what it takes? The new Extinction Challenge Mode raises the bar even higher, with even more aggressive zombies that are harder to take down and can infect you on contact. Allies will be tougher to distinguish from the pack and death occurs after just one incapacitation, with respawns only possible at checkpoints.

Players are able to fire from the hip or aim down sights with both their primary and sidearm weapons, use melee attacks instantly if they start to get surrounded, and even throw grenades to try and thin out a horde so they can catch their breath. The combat is intense and only lets up occasionally while you and your team try to complete objectives or prepare to take on a giant Zeke tsunami.

A favourite playstyle of mine in these first and third-person shooter games is “going loud”. Letting loose with every big gun and explosive at every chance. The great thing is that World War Z gives you that choice, but it comes with a flipside. Sneaking through an area using silenced weapons is great because you get time to search an area thoroughly for a better weapon or piece of equipment that will be handy later in the mission. Most times though a player accidentally fires a stray bullet into a car, the alarm sounds, and its go time. If you have seen the 2013 Paramount Pictures movie that the game is based on, once you awaken the horde, there’s an almighty raw as literally hundreds of zombies charge your position, clambering up and over each other forming zombie-walls as they try to get over obstacles to you and your team.

The Yankees are trying to become just the second team ever — joining the 2004 Red Sox in the ALCS — to win a postseason series after trailing 3-0. They’ve already become the first World Series team in 10 tries to fall behind 3-0 and force a Game 5 (the most recent had been the 1970 Reds).

Ghost of Tsushima follows the adventures of a samurai during the Mongol invasion of Japan (the titular Isle of Tsushima, to be precise). The game is, in a word, beautiful. Its scenic vistas hide a variety of side activities that encourage audiences to absorb the beauty of nature. Moreover, Ghost of Tsushima encourages players to approach combat and missions in multiple ways while also weaving those decisions into a narrative where honor clashes with survival.

There is a visceral pleasure to watching mechanical monstrosities terrorize villagers in a world that feels so close (yet so far) from our own, but this game truly shines whenever you take it upon yourself to dig a little deeper. Maybe aspects of Horizon Zero Dawn’s open-world gameplay played it a bit too safe, but the quality of its lore, world, and characters immediately set it apart from nearly everything else out there. – MB

The problem with a lot of survival games is that you end up getting so caught up in the process of staying alive that you start to wonder what you’re supposed to be living for. The thrill of trying to beat the odds is exciting in its own right, but the whole arrangement sometimes falls apart when you start to ask yourself why you’re even bothering to see the next day in the first place.

According to Game Informer’s Kyle Hilliard, Hydlide (1984) and The Legend of Zelda (1986) were among the first open-world games, along with Ultima. IGN traces the roots of open-world game design to The Legend of Zelda, which it argues is “the first really good game based on exploration”, while noting that it was anticipated by Hydlide, which it argues is “the first RPG that rewarded exploration”. According to GameSpot, never “had a game so open-ended, nonlinear, and liberating been released for the mainstream market” before The Legend of Zelda. According to The Escapist, The Legend of Zelda was an early example of open-world, nonlinear gameplay, with an expansive and cohesive world, inspiring many games to adopt a similar open-world design.

Mercenary (1985) has been cited as the first open world 3D action-adventure game. There were also other open-world games in the 1980s, such as Back to Skool (1985), Turbo Esprit (1986) and Alternate Reality: The City (1985). Wasteland, released in 1988, is also considered an open-world game. The early 1990s saw open-world games such as The Terminator (1990), The Adventures of Robin Hood (1991), and Hunter (1991), which IGN describes as the first sandbox game to feature full 3D, third-person graphics, and Ars Technica argues “has one of the strongest claims to the title of GTA forebear”. Sierra On-Line’s 1992 adventure game King’s Quest VI has an open world; almost half of the quests are optional, many have multiple solutions, and players can solve most in any order. Atari Jaguar launch title, Cybermorph (1993), was notable for its open 3D polygonal-world and non-linear gameplay. Quarantine (1994) is an example of an open-world driving game from this period, while Iron Soldier (1994) is an open-world mech game. The director of 1997’s Blade Runner argues that that game was the first open world three-dimensional action adventure game.
