World series game today
A structured playoff series began in 1969 when both the National and American Leagues were reorganized into two divisions each, East and West. The two division winners within each league played each other in a best-of-five League Championship Series to determine who would advance to the World Series. helicopter windshield In 1985, the format changed to best-of-seven.
Prior to 2003, home-field advantage in the World Series alternated from year to year between the NL and AL. After the 2002 Major League Baseball All-Star Game ended in a tie, MLB decided to award home-field advantage in the World Series to the winner of the All-Star Game. Originally implemented as a two-year trial from 2003 to 2004, the practice was extended.
The series is best remembered for its Game 6, which saw the Mets rally from a two-run deficit in the bottom of the 10th inning, despite having two outs and no one on base. The Red Sox, who held a 3–2 series lead, were twice one strike away from securing the championship, but failed to close out the inning as the Mets tie on a Bob Stanley wild pitch & win off an error by Boston first baseman Bill Buckner. Due to the Mets claiming the series in Game 7, the Game 6 collapse entered baseball lore as part of the Curse of the Bambino superstition used to explain the Red Sox’s championship drought after the 1918 World Series.
Game 3 college world series
Rubber match! That’s right: after four seasons without a Game 3, we were treated to two in a row — featuring the same two teams! The second time around, Virginia got its revenge against Vanderbilt, topping the ‘Dores 4-2 for the Cavaliers’ first national title.
“We have just got to stay focused, stay urgent,” Roberts said postgame of his team’s World Series chances. “Offensively, to be quite honest, we left a lot of runs out there tonight and still found a way win a ball game. There’s got to be urgency. I don’t want to let these guys up for air.”
The 3-1 score held all the way until the bottom of the seventh inning, where Tennessee appeared to take control of the game with an emphatic three-run frame. CWS Most Outstanding Player Dylan Dreiling hit a towering two-run home run — his third in the CWS Finals — while Kavares Tears hit a ringing RBI double into right-centerfield. A fantastic relay by Jace LaViolette and Ali Camarillo led to the throw beating Hunter Ensley to the plate, but Ensley somehow got inside and around the tag of catcher Jackson Appel with a nifty juke-like move.
The top of the eighth inning for the Volunteers was essentially a carbon copy of the seventh, as with two outs and a runner on first Cal Stark broke out of his 0-for-16 slump with a no-doubt, two-run blast over the bullpen in left field.
While Tennessee tried its best to chip away, it still trailed 11-8 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning. The Volunteers began the inning in emphatic fashion and cut the Seminoles’ lead to 11-9 after a Kavares Tears triple and a Dean Curley sac-fly, but with the bases empty and one out it still felt like FSU was in control. However three hitters later, Christian Moore—who earlier in the game became just the second player in CWS history to hit for the cycle—laced his second double of the game to put runners on second and third with two outs.
World series 5 game highlights
Altuve puts a charge in one, but not enough, and Pederson tracks it down in center for the first out. Correa then pops out to Bellinger, who makes a wonderful catch half in the stands. Two outs, and it’s down to Gurriel if the Astros are going to avoid going to extras.
Philadelphia lost consecutive games for the first time this postseason. The Phillies adjusted plans following the Game 3 rainout and wore vintage powder blue uniforms in the Series for first time since 1983.
• This was the fifth straight season in which a Will Smith won a World Series ring, thanks to the Dodgers’ catcher. In 2023 it was LHP Will Smith (TEX), who also won in 2022 (HOU) and 2021 (ATL). In 2020, it was catcher Will Smith — who homered off the pitcher earlier in that postseason run.
Andre Ethier beats the shift with a single the other way, but Cody Bellinger can’t move him over, as he flies out to center. Two down, Ethier still at first. Ethier almost took out Altuve at second base, but it’s an out all the same, and Altuve seems fine. Ethier checked on the Astros’ second baseman immediately, just so you know.
